Hello ASNY Members!
In case you are all wondering how the recent NYS elections are affecting our profession, here are a few updates:
- In NYS, the Democrats won control of the State Senate with potentially the largest majority since 1912, and continued to dominate the State Assembly. Governor Andrew Cuomo and Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul remain in office for another term, giving Democrats complete control of State government, which will likely have major implications on public policy in the near future. We also now have our first woman and person of color to be elected NY’s Attorney General with NY City Public Advocate Leticia James. For ASNY, with many new faces in the Senate especially, we have many new representatives to introduce ourselves to and educate about why they need to support and protect Acupuncture in NYS. This is a time of new-relationship-building and public education about the issues important to our membership will need to be a high priority for us and everyone’s help will be needed.
- Our Workers’ Compensation Bill (S06666/A02023A) is still awaiting Governor Cuomo’s attention and hopeful signature. Now that the election season is over, we are hopeful that he will direct his attention to it shortly after Thanksgiving. In the meantime, WE STILL NEED YOUR HELP! Please flood his office with these bi-fold letters…simply print (dual-sided), sign, fold, and mail. THIS ONE from us, LAc’s, and THIS ONE to print off and give to you patients, family and friends. Now is the time that this matters!
- Our lobbyist was able to create an alliance with the group Friends of Recovery New York (FOR-NY). This organization works on behalf of millions of individuals and families in NY to educate decision makers and general public about recovery from addiction. They graciously wrote a letter to Governor Cuomo on behalf of ASNY in support of our Workers Compensation Bill, as it aligns with their mission to support the addition of proactive approaches to combatting addiction and saving lives. Take a look at the great things they say about acupuncture here.
- After the holidays, be on the lookout for more information on committee work and opportunities for participation. The ASNY Board of Directors will be moving forward with some organizational housekeeping and legislative strategizing, and we will be looking for member participation to help us be more effective.
Happy Autumn and Happy Upcoming Holidays!!!!
